Diversity in law has
been a predominant subject for many years, and was recently brought to the
forefront following a speech from Lady Hale at Birmingham University. The only female
member of the UK’s Supreme Court, she has steadfastly argued that the judiciary
needs to be more inclusive of candidates from varied backgrounds.
Since Lady Hale was sworn in as a lord of appeal in January 2004, fifteen law lords have been appointed. All of these were white men, with all but two having gone to Oxford or Cambridge. Six vacancies within the Supreme Court will appear between September 2016 and December 2018 due to retirements. Lady Hale stated “If we do not manage to achieve a much more diverse court in the process of filling them, we ought to be ashamed of ourselves.”
This was preceded by claims from Lady Justice Hallett, who argued that rising student debts posed a threat to improving diversity in law. She put forward ideas to introduce training grants to those from less privileged social backgrounds to help them to pursue the legal profession.
