Following our recent promotion of Rachael Haine and Pippa Bavington to Associate Solicitors, we are delighted to announce that Daniel Curnock has been promoted to Partner here at Giles Wilson Solicitors.
Daniel will continue to head up the Private Client team at our firm, working alongside Melinda Giles and the rest of our highly skilled team. We are delighted that Daniel has accepted this new role.
Below, Daniel discusses his role at Giles Wilson in greater detail, including why he chose a career in law and what he finds most rewarding about his work.
"I am very proud to state that I am now a Partner at Giles Wilson and head up the Private Client team, primarily based in Leigh-on-Sea.
"I advise and assist individuals and families with all aspects of succession, tax and asset protection planning. This includes advice on wills (and in particular, wills incorporating trusts), inheritance tax, capital gains tax, administration of estates, Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection matters.
"I joined Giles Wilson in February 2017, having previously headed departments in two firms based in Southampton and Bournemouth. I was delighted to be presented with an opportunity to join the very highly rated and most exciting Private Client team in the south of England. The Private Client team at Giles Wilson has a wealth of experience in a wide range of private client areas and has extensive recognition for the high standards of work produced and excellent service. But my main reason for joining this department, notable for winning awards for excellence, was taken with a view to being part of a team that wants to be known as the very best Private Client department outside of London.
"Giles Wilson Solicitors are a firm with great and modern aspirations to offer the very best client service. I can honestly say that I love getting up in the morning to come to work with people who, from the very top, share the same ambitions and aspirations as me in what is a very exciting time for our firm.
"My role as a Partner and Head of Department is not only to exceed expectations of my own clients but to ensure my department and the firm as a whole, offer the very highest levels of service to all our clients.
"I act in the administration of high value and complex estates, specialise in protecting assets (whether that be safeguarding from care costs or tax) and advise on a wide range of trust instruments and trust administration.
"My cases typically require bespoke arrangements or remedies to meet particular and often, unusual needs of my clients, whether in the provision of tax or trust advice or ensuring that a will is drafted in such a way as to meet all of my clients' requirements."
Why did I choose a career in law…
"My parents would always say that my argumentative streak and my reluctance to ever accept that I was wrong made me the perfect candidate for a career in law. Initially I wanted to be an artist and I have always been a perfectionist. My artwork now consists of perfectly drafted wills!
"Once my career as a lawyer began, it was clear to me that my area of expertise would always be in the Private Client sector because I love meeting people. I find people and families fascinating, which is probably why I now like to advise on estate planning, saving huge amounts of tax for families and administering complex estates with the view of maximising the amount of money left to bereaved family members."
What do I find most rewarding about my job…
"I act for some very vulnerable people, particularly with Court of Protection work. Giles Wilson as a firm specialises in law relating to mental capacity and as solicitors we collectively pride ourselves on the management and protection of assets for the vulnerable with cases that come to us already in a state of disarray. I find it very rewarding to know that someone is no longer in a vulnerable situation and has all safeguards in place to ensure all their needs are met as a result of our assistance.
"I also find dealing with very complex issues rewarding. I deal with a number of cases in niche areas, such as forfeiture legislation, and cases with a very high emotive aspect. Concluding a matter and taking the strain off often one or two individuals is very satisfying."
What do I do when I am away from the office…
"For anyone who knows me, I love my food. Therefore, I am a keen cook because I love to eat. I have two lovely dogs who are very energetic and require a lot of attention and walking. To counter my love for food, I visit the gym very regularly and play football every week."
"Many thanks once again for your very professional support."
"Thank you so much, you were brilliant!"
"Thank you for all your support and guidance in what was a very difficult and emotional time."
"Certainly the best solicitor I have ever been to, would recommend you to anyone!"
"You are an absolute superstar."
