Moving On Up: Helen Martin
It’s our exceptional team of law experts that are the driving force behind the success of Giles Wilson. We are proud to have a group of talented individuals working within the firm, with a depth of experience across a range of fields. In July we had the pleasure of promoting four of our legal professionals. In the first two posts of our ‘Moving On Up’ series, we focused on two of our solicitors, Sarah Smith and Jonathan Hodge, who are now Associate Solicitors.
In this edition, the spotlight is on Helen Martin, who has recently become a partner in the firm.
In only 7 years, Helen Martin has gone from paralegal at the beginning of her legal career to an expert in the field of Property Law and Business Commercial Law, as well as becoming a partner in Giles Wilson Solicitors. However, it could have turned out very differently! In her own words, Helen once had some “lofty ambitions” of becoming a world-famous actress but instead chose to study a degree in Law, which, she admits, was partly influenced by the glamour of Ally McBeal and Legally Blonde. We have a lot to thank Elle Woods for!
Having taken a year out to gain some real life experience outside of education, Helen was accepted to study Law at Southampton Solent University and graduated with a 2:1 in 2007. Her legal career kicked off at the start of 2008 when she joined Kloosmans Solicitors. After a spending a year at Kloosmans, Helen joined Giles Wilson as a paralegal in the spring of 2009 and has been practising here ever since. Whilst she started out supporting our team of solicitors, Helen’s legal prowess, leadership ability and natural talent quickly shone through. It is these qualities that have seen her periodically promoted within the team to the partner level that she now assumes.
In her day-to-day work, Helen provides expert advice on a variety of legal issues including residential and commercial conveyancing and other commercial matters, such as company law. Helen’s work is routinely highly praised for the “efficiency, competence and sound advice” she offers, and she has become the “first port of call for all legal matters” for many of her clients.
Outside of the office, Helen is a big dog lover and can often be found accompanied by her French Bulldog, Margot. She also takes an active role within the local community. In 2014, Helen was named as named as Chapter Director of the Southend BNI. As part of this she regularly gives 10-minute talks covering various areas of law.
In June of 2016, Helen shared her expertise on the legalities of property. In partnership with Rizmic, the home of buy to let, she presented a series of videos that covered legal hints and tips for landlords. In this series she discussed a number of topics including what you should consider when buying a property at auction and how you can safeguard your interests when purchasing a property with another party. You can also read Helen’s highly regarded commercial property series on our blog, where she shares her insight on topics such as business rates and how they are changing.
Helen can offer unrivalled professional legal advice on a range of property and business commercial issues. If you would like to receive expert guidance from Helen, or any other member of the Giles Wilson team, call us 01702 477106 to arrange a free 30-minute consultation.
