On Up: Specialist in Civil Litigation - Jonathan Hodge
We at Giles Wilson appreciate the extremely talented team of lawyers that ply their trade at our bustling law firm. Recently, we had the pleasure of promoting four of our legal professionals due to their outstanding work and leadership ability. Our previous instalment of the Moving On Up series focused on our new Associate and conveyancing expert Sarah Smith.
This second edition shines the spotlight on Jonathan Hodge, our media law specialist who also now assumes the role of Associate Solicitor.
Jonathan Hodge is a specialist in Civil Litigation, which encompasses a wide range of complex and challenging legal disputes. Joining Giles Wilson as a paralegal in February 2013, Jonathan’s dedication and diligence has quickly made him a key member of our team, particularly in aiding the development of paralegals at our firm and fostering burgeoning legal talent in Essex through initiatives like the Giles Wilson Moot.
Attaining a degree in Theology from King’s College London, Jonathan began his professional career as a caseworker and researcher for numerous Members of Parliament. This provided him first-hand experience into the legislative process, allowed him opportunity to prepare persuasive speeches and honed his ability to support the problems of constituents.
At the same time, Jonathan was attending evening and weekend classes to complete a second degree in Law. He left his previous role to take up a paralegal position at our firm, beginning his training contract to become a fully-fledged solicitor in January 2014. At this time, Jonathan also began his popular ‘Day in the Life’ series of blogs, offering a compelling insight into his development at Giles Wilson.
The autumn of 2015 was a significant period for Jonathan. He completed his training contract in October and concluded his Legal Practice Course and Master’s Degree in Law, both of which he had studied for part-time. Another step in his rapid assent was passing his Higher Rights of Audience exams, giving him the ability to appear in Court for clients who may not wish to retain a barrister.
Within a few short months, Jonathan was making headlines for his exceptional skill. He has quickly established himself as an authoritative solicitor, specialising in a number of niche areas of law that are rarely found outside of city-based firms. This includes defamation, with Jonathan’s knowledge proving an invaluable asset in the development of our informative social defamation quiz.
This notable development as a solicitor was rewarded in November 2015, as Jonathan was named Rising Star of the Year at the prestigious Modern Law Awards. He has put a great deal of effort into finding the next rising stars in law. Jonathan is instrumental in our highly successful Sixth Form mooting competition, mentoring students throughout the process. He also implemented our new training system for paralegals, which received national recognition by winning the award for Excellence in Learning and Development at the 2015 Law Society Awards.
Outside of the office, Jonathan has taken an active role in his local community, twice standing as a candidate for local elections in 2014 and 2016. He has a passion for sports, holding a black belt in jujitsu and often playing football, golf and tennis, alongside a love of chess and the piano.
