Congratulations are in order for Rachael Haine and Pippa Bavington, as they were recently promoted to Associate Solicitors here at Giles Wilson. As a firm, we enjoy seeing our talented professionals develop and progress as part of our team, and Rachael and Pippa have become integral members of it. Both were delighted with the opportunity to grow as part of our forward-thinking firm in their new roles.
Rachael is one of our Family Law solicitors, specialising in child matters, divorce and cohabitation disputes among other areas. Pippa works in our Private Client department, handling matters involving wills, probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney.
Below, both Rachael and Pippa offer some insight into their beginnings in law, how they arrived at Giles Wilson, and how they have developed in their respective fields since joining our offices in Leigh-on-Sea and Rochford.
“When I chose my A-levels, I didn’t ever intend to go to university and read Law. I initially wanted to be a vet, however I found out I wasn’t as good at science as I had hoped to be! It was my parents who suggested a law degree as they felt it was “well rounded” and would give me a good base, whatever career path I decided to follow.
“I finished my law degree and was still uncertain as to what I wanted to do. I was offered work experience over the summer within the family department of a local solicitors firm. It was this opportunity that made me decide that law was the career I wanted to pursue. I ended up working there for almost 3 months and enjoyed every minute of it. I decided I wanted to do my Legal Practice Course, and was accepted a week before the term started! I really enjoyed the practical side of the LPC, seeing how the theory I had learnt in the three years prior was applied on a day to day basis in practice.
“Family law was what gave me the “bug” during my work experience and I was lucky enough to secure a training contract after my LPC finished in the family department of a local firm.
“Several career moves later, I found myself joining Giles Wilson in August 2015. I knew straight away that it was a firm I wanted to be an integral part of and progress within.
Since joining Giles Wilson, I have challenged myself further by undertaking my Resolution Specialist Accreditation. Family law is constantly changing which I enjoy as I like learning about new things and educating myself.
“When I was offered the role of an Associate, I was so excited! I felt honoured that my hard work had been recognised and that the Partners wanted me to join them in the management side of the firm. I am really looking forward to the challenges of this new role and being a part of the Giles Wilson team moving forward.”
“At age 18, going off to study law at university, I had no understanding of “private client” work or what this really entailed.
“Now, I find myself lucky enough to work in a role which is academically stimulating, challenging with such a vast range of personalities engaged with on a daily basis, and also immensely rewarding (even to the extent that my cliché reason for pursuing a legal career of “wanting to help people” has become a reality).
“A period between my training contract and my NQ role was spent in complaint handling, which has proved to provide some useful skills in managing expectations and taught me to try to explain complicated concepts in plain English wherever possible!
“Since joining Giles Wilson in October 2014, I feel I have grown in my ability as a solicitor, and with their encouragement I undertook the STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates, which I completed last year. I found this has increased my confidence in developing my “specialism”.
“Finally, recently being offered the Associate role is a huge privilege and I am excited to continue here at Giles Wilson with a great team of people, continuing to learn and grow with the firm.”
We have no doubt that Rachael and Pippa will thrive in their new roles and continue to play a key role in Giles Wilson’s growth for the foreseeable future.
