Read the Small Print
most recently received a lot of enquiries in relation to
terminating contracts that have been entered into and the
costs involved for any termination.
Most people do not read the small print when agreeing to advertising, estate agent agreements or even terms and conditions. By taking simply 5 minutes to read through the terms you could be saving yourself hundreds of pounds in legal costs further down the line – particularly considering how one-sided agreements can be.
You would be surprised to hear how many agreements are for an initial fixed period but even after that has expired you are expected to serve notice of terminating the contract and still incur the fees of the business whether they have provided you with an adequate service or not. I would especially warn small businesses that enter into agreements, as you do not have the protection of the Unfair Contract Terms Act (which consumers have in most cases). A long drawn out court procedure could be necessary simply for the terms to be considered to be unfair, but this protection is limited and companies are aware that they can add uneven terms when the contract is “business to business”. And ignorance of the law is not an excuse!
So – you have been warned. Be careful, if in doubt contact us, and we can glance through any documentation to ensure you aren’t signing your life or money away.
