Not long after I joined Giles Wilson, Melinda Giles proposed I undertake the STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates. It was something completely unfamiliar to me at the time – which now seems shocking!
STEP is the Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners and is a globally recognised acknowledgement of a level of expertise in Probate work. It brings together member solicitors specialising in Private Client work to become experts in their field, share information with one another, and also pass this onto clients and the general public through a high standard of service.
Now, having undertaken four gruelling years of studies (an Advanced Certificate each year), I cannot thank Melinda enough for encouraging me to take on this challenge. The certificates focused on:
· Administration of Estates
· Administration of Trusts
· Solicitor Accounts
The STEP Diploma has given me a more detailed and proficient understanding of various aspects of my daily work, allowing me to develop my confidence and professional expertise.
Most refreshingly, I have been able to apply what I have learnt in practice, demonstrating that STEP really does focus on working solicitors, rather than merely academics. This has enabled me to provide a higher level of service, often by way of advising on tax-efficiency and otherwise providing positive results or desired outcomes for clients.
It has also allowed me to take on more complex work, which in itself has provided further job satisfaction, and allowed me to feel a valued member of a strong Private Client team here at Giles Wilson.
I would recommend the STEP Diploma to anyone to develop their knowledge and niche – although they should be prepared for some lifestyle changes while studying. I am now proud to call myself a full member of STEP – although perhaps not with the catchiest title of TEP – having passed with a Distinction this year.
